Discover the Hidden Treasures of Lençóis Maranhenses and Beyond

Lençóis Maranhenses, translating to “bedsheets” in reference to the state of Maranhão, is a hidden paradise in Brazil’s Northeast. This extraordinary landscape features pristine white sand dunes interspersed with stunning blue and emerald freshwater lagoons. Covering 155,000 hectares (380,000 acres), these rolling dunes stretch from the heartland to the ocean, offering 70 km of coastline and cinematic vistas. The ideal time to visit is between April and September when the lagoons are at their peak, and the weather is ideal.

Heading east along the coastline, nestled between the states of Maranhão and Piauí, you’ll find the Parnaíba River Delta— the largest open-sea delta in the Americas and the third largest globally. This ecological sanctuary, rich with dunes, mangrove forests, igarapés (narrow waterways navigable by canoe or small boats), freshwater lagoons, and diverse wildlife, remains remarkably unspoiled. One memorable experience is watching the vibrant red Guará birds (Scarlet ibis) flock to nest as the sun sets.

Continuing along the coast, you’ll discover gems like Barra Grande, a destination with excellent wind conditions perfect for kite and windsurfing (weather permitting). For those seeking tranquility, enjoy kayaking, stand-up paddling, canoeing, and the opportunity to spot wildlife like crabs, birds, and seahorses. Relax in the wooden bungalows spread across the sandy beach, basking in the refreshing sea breeze.

A bit further lies perhaps the most famed stop on this route: Jericoacoara, in the state of Ceará. Once a quaint fishing village, “Jeri” has transformed into a lively destination brimming with hotels, pousadas, bars, and restaurants, yet it retains its enchanting charm. However, we recommend staying in the nearby village of Preá. This quieter, more authentic fishing village allows you to enjoy the vibrant activities of Jeri by day or night while providing a more serene home base.

These locations offer some of the most breathtaking landscapes in Brazil, defined by their remote tranquility and immersive natural beauty. Here, visitors can appreciate not only the stunning scenery but also the simple, serene lifestyle of the local inhabitants.
